Summary:
The Director of Carrier Operations will direct and execute services, resources, methods and controls through carrier relationships and contract negotiations to meet capacity, quality, cost and safety standards. This position will establish tracking for evaluation and analysis that provides for continuous improvement in on-time performance, service quality and cost containment. The Director of Carrier Operations will recommend and implement improvements and/or modifications of process, methods and resource utilization and will be the primary business contact between Ashley Distribution (ADS) and carrier Sales and/or management. This position will develop existing and new over-the-road (OTR) carriers as well as support new and expanded business opportunities including ground-floor participation in the building of a brokerage division within the company. This position also oversees all areas of carrier operations.
The Director of Carrier Operations is accountable for maintaining OTR carrier and brokerage profit and loss (P&L) information, including gross revenue and operating expenses.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze, evaluate, plan and negotiate Carrier contract rates, lane coverage, small package rates, and the development of Ashley Distribution Services (ADS) Brokerage Division.
- Create, monitor, adjust and improve carrier scorecards including on-time performance of all carriers/modes and accuracy of data in key Over the Road (OTR) carrier intermodal lanes to support inbound, transfer and billable volume.
- Keep up-to-date of Industry trends and activities and then advise other top leadership of said industry activities, trends and alternative methods.
- Work in conjunction with fleet operations, shipping, imports and product planning to plan, forecast and ensure timely product flow; work on cross-functional teams related to import and export activities.
- Is accountable for monitoring and adjusting seasonal capacity demand and carrier performance. This position will oversee carrier to lane assignment, ensuring capacity is met with the right carriers.
- Recommend and implement improvements.
- Build and strengthen carrier network through existing and new carrier relationships.
- Oversee and manage the carrier database within existing transportation management system.
- Participate actively in onboarding of new clients, carrier sourcing & selection, carrier requests for pricing (RFPs) and new carrier onboarding/service compliancy.
- Administer carrier profiles, contact information, networking strategies and vendor database development and lane rates.
- Work with carriers to identify and record strategic areas/lanes of interest.
- Oversee and manage Carrier and Brokerage claim administration.
- Make employment decisions and/or recommendations on hiring, improvement plans, transfers, promotions, corrective actions, terminations, pay adjustments, etc.
- Coordinate and manage the work of employees by directing members of the team to meet the area’s goals. Audit regularly to ensure standard operating procedures are being adhered to.
- Manage employee performance and assist employees in making improvements to their performance through coaching, mentoring and administering performance reviews. Recommend, plan and/or implement employee training and skill development activities.
- Audit, maintain and ensure employee time-keeping and absentee records are accurate.
- Communicate company and departmental issues and goals and facilitate employee growth and development through weekly team meetings, regular individual employee meetings, coaching, training, and company-offered learning opportunities.
- Manage resources to optimize equipment, facilities, employees, methods and materials.
